Family Laridae Lineup

Description:

This digital illustration shows four species within the family Laridae that are native to Western North America: The Forster’s Tern, Heermann’s Gull, Western Gull, and Ring-billed Gull. All four species are shown in profile in adult breeding plumage, and in scale with each other, to make differences between the species more apparent. I chose to show the gull species walking or standing and the tern species actively flying to indicate the differences in general habits between gulls and terns, that being terns remain continually in flight for long periods compared to their close relatives.

I made this illustration for an interpretive panel, which was part of a project I did for the City of Novato. Click here to see the full composition.
